Research: Metrology for Microfluidic Device Manufacturing
Postdoctoral Associate May 2007-Present, Department of Mechanical Engineering in MIT
In this period my research has been focused on the optical measurement or sensing in microfluidic devices, which, also called lab-on-a-chip, has the promise to transform traditional biological, chemical and pharmaceutical apparatuses from large sizes to a single chip.
- Developed a minimized Optical Coherence Tomography to inspect the three-dimensional bonding quality of the packaged polymer-based microfluidic devices.
- Developed a minimized Optical Doppler tomography to measure the three-dimensional flow velocity distribution inside the polymer-based microfluidic devices.
- Developed a white-light confocal microscopy for the automatic measurement of the buried feature such as microvalve membrane thickness in the polymer-based microfluidic devices.
- Developed a novel white-light scanning interferometer to measure and control the absolute nano-scale gap formed by two planar plates, which has the promise to be used in hot-embossing technique for process control, in environmental science for water purification, and in biological field to filter DNA or molecules.
- Developed a moiré fringe method to determine automatically the micro distortion in hot-embossing process for the production of microfluidic devices, which helped optimizing the manufacturing parameters and improving the product quality.
- Developed metrology technology and measurement standard for large-scale high-volume manufacturing of polymer-based microfluidic devices;
- Developed data fusion technique for metrology data sets from separate instruments in profile measurement for microfluidic devices, which combined the strengths of multiple instruments by data stitching, data combining and data comparison.

- Developed the instrumentation and industrialization of the new displacement sensor “Laser Nanometer Ruler” and established the collaboration with a German company, Blankenhorn GmbH, to push the sensor into the global market.
Research Assistant Sep.1999—Dec. 2006, The State key Laboratory of Precision Measurement Technology and Instruments, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China
- Established the theory of cat’s eye laser resonator and folded cat’s eye laser resonator;
- Set up a new principle to realize the real-time control of the laser transverse mode by cat’s eye resonator.
- Developed a new displacement sensor “Laser Nanometer Ruler” with 79nm resolution 12mm measurement range and self-calibration function;
- Developed another displacement sensor “Folded Resonator-Laser nanometer ruler” with 39.6nm resolution 15mm measurement range and self-calibration function.
- Developed a laser dynamic testing system for measuring on-line the flap and lag angles of the aircraft rotor blade;
